Two New York musical brothers have joined forces to form a blazing jazz quintet”. That’s what the morning after headline will read when alto saxophonist Jon Gordon and trumpeter Michael Morreale hit the stage together on Friday May 17th at Paradiso. Both are exceptional improvisors, prolific composers, and educators. Gordon won the Thelonious Monk competition in 1996 and has gone on to record fourteen albums as a leader, performing with everyone from Clark Terry to The Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra at festivals and jazz clubs all over the world. To name just a few, the list includes Tony Bennett, Phil Woods, Roy Eldridge, Chico Hamilton, Barney Kessel, and many more. Saxophone legend Wayne Shorter summed it up best: “Gordon has embraced the history of his instrument, carrying with it the ability to extend music as a universal language”.
Morreale has racked up six albums as a leader so far, two of which feature Gordon in a quintet format. A longtime Santa Fe favorite, Michael was originally featured on two highly acclaimed Straight Up albums back in the late 90’s and early 2000’s, and has recorded six albums and toured the world with Joe Jackson. His credits also include work with Chuck Wayne, Houston Person, Don Joseph, The Turk Van Lake Orchestra, Tommy Igoe and Lew Anderson’s Big Band, along with a twenty five year tenure as leader of The Staten Island Chamber Players Jazz Quartet. Joining the rhythm section for this concert will be Bob Fox on piano, Terry Burns on bass, and John Trentacosta on drums.
